Decimal Odds

Decimal Odds

Definition

Decimal odds are a popular format for displaying betting odds, especially in Europe, Canada, Australia, and Asia. Unlike fractional or American odds, decimal odds represent the total payout (stake + profit) for every 1 unit wagered.

Formula

To calculate the potential return, simply use:

Return = Stake × Decimal Odds

To find the profit only, subtract your stake:

Profit = (Stake × Decimal Odds) – Stake

Example

  • Decimal odds: 2.50

  • Stake: €100

  • Return = €100 × 2.50 = €250

  • Profit = €250 – €100 = €150

Interpretation

Decimal Odds Implied Probability Description
1.50 66.7% Strong favorite
2.00 50.0% Even odds (coin flip)
3.00 33.3% Moderate underdog
5.00+ 20% or less Major outsider

To calculate implied probability, use:

Implied Probability (%) = (1 ÷ Decimal Odds) × 100

Advantages of Decimal Odds

  • Easier to understand than fractional odds

  • Clear display of total return (not just profit)

  • Used in most global sportsbooks and betting exchanges

  • Perfect for calculating multi-leg parlays

How They Compare

Format Odds Example Return on €100 Stake
Decimal 2.50 €250 total
Fractional 3/2 €250 total
American +150 €250 total

All of these represent the same payout, just in a different format.

Use Cases

  • Commonly used in betting apps and websites

  • Ideal for live betting and multi-market comparisons

  • Often combined with tools like implied probability calculators

Common Misunderstandings

  • Mistake: Thinking 2.00 odds mean “double profit”
✔ Reality: It includes your stake, so your profit is equal to your stake

  • Mistake: Assuming decimal odds don’t change —
✔ Live markets constantly adjust decimal odds in real time
